A gift for a new puppy owner: a book about the puppy, made when it has a story
Most new puppy gifts are for the puppy: chew toys, a bed, a lead it will outgrow. This one is for the person who now gets up at night. It is a book about the puppy, and they make it when there is something to tell.
Why it can wait
In its first week a puppy has a name and not much else. A few months later it has a spot it has claimed, a sound it comes running for and a thing it will not walk past. That is what the book is made of.
The gift is valid for a year. The owner opens it when they like, answers eight short questions about the puppy and gets a 28-page book with their own photos and drawings of the puppy.
Example: the basket and the sofa
Ollie is a French bulldog born in 2021. Officially he sleeps in the basket next to the sofa. Really he takes Kim's place on the sofa the moment she gets up, and moves ten centimetres when she comes back. Every new owner buys the basket; the book is about what happens after. Ollie is an example, not a customer.
Ten Centimetres
Officially Ollie sleeps in the basket next to the sofa. Really he sleeps on the sofa, in Kim's place, the moment she gets up. When she comes back, she finds him there, and he looks at her and shifts ten centimetres, as if that small move settles the matter and the sofa was never really hers to begin with, only borrowed while she was gone.

The first page: how the puppy came
The book opens with a page about the animal: breed, birth year, who it lives with, what it loves and what it fears. It also asks how the animal came to them, with room for a line about the day. For a puppy, that day is still fresh.
How you give it
- Say who it is for, the puppy's name if it has one yet, and a message.
- Hand over a printed card, send the image from your phone, or have the gift emailed at eight in the morning on a day you choose.
- The owner makes the book when the puppy has settled in. They see no price.
- You hear when the book is ready.
For a new kitten
It works the same for a kitten. When the owner chooses cat, the questions ask what it brings in, which box is its own and who it lets near. A kitten that hides from the camera is no problem: one photo is enough, and drawings fill the rest.
What else a new owner can use
- An evening of puppy-sitting, so they can go out.
- Company on the first walks, once the puppy may go out.
- Photos you take of the puppy in the first weeks. They will want them later, and they can go in the book.
- Toys to chew. A puppy gets through a lot of them.

Questions
What do you get someone with a new puppy?
Things for the puppy get chewed or outgrown. A book about the puppy, which the owner makes once it has habits, stays.
When should they make the book?
Whenever they like within the year. A few months in, the puppy has habits worth writing down.
Can they add photos later?
Yes. Every page can be changed, and a photo can be swapped for a newer one.
Is it suitable for a rescue dog?
Yes. The first page has a line for how the animal came to them. For a rescue, Gotcha Day is the anniversary of that day.
Does it work for a new kitten or rabbit?
Yes. They choose dog or cat, or type the kind of animal.
